Sky School Division projects and teaching resources to connect us to the land. What are the stories we learn from the land and while on the land?
Learning on the land and from the land, offers a perspective about learning that is unique from traditional classrooms. When we acknowledge the land as a teacher and the universe as my classroom, we begin to find the potential in observation, curiosity and documenting as ways of knowing the world.
What are your core beliefs? What is important to consider and remember?
Quentin Weenie, from Sweetgrass First Nation, shares the traditions and protocols for storytelling and sharing knowledge. These teachings by the nēhiyawēwin (or Cree) are local to our area in Treaty 6 territory but are also known as Grandfather Teachings and 7 Sacred Teachings (Anishinaabe).
When planning units and projects, we look through a holistic lens that includes all domains of the child: intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual. The activities follow an approach developed by Circle of Courage (explanation attached).
This Slide set was provided as PD for teachers in Living Sky School Division on September 2020. Resources and links are provided in the power point.
This slideshow may be used to lead discussion and professional development with teachers as they consider what is needed for an outdoor classroom.
This was created in the Fall 2020, in response to the Saskatchewan guidelines for Covid 19 that suggested learning outside. We have restrictions: no travel, no outside guests, keep physical distance or wear masks.
We may bring in guests virtually to teach, share stories and traditional knowledge through our Living Histories project funding.
